Likely causes

What is usually behind it

The same symptom can have very different causes, and they cost very different amounts. This is what we are actually looking for.

What you seeUsual causeWhat we do
Not holding temperatureA dirty condenser coil, a failing fan, or refrigerant leaking outClean the coil and check the pressures; if the charge is low we find the leak before adding refrigerant
Ice on the evaporatorRestricted airflow or a low refrigerant chargeThaw it, then work out which: airflow problems and charge problems are fixed very differently
Water leakingA blocked condensate drain or a failed condensate pumpClear the line and test the pump; ducted systems in attics often rely on one
Switching on and offA tripped pressure control, failing start components or a controller faultCheck the pressure control and start components before anyone suggests a new compressor
Reading looks wrongA sensor in the wrong place or a failing probeCheck the cellar with our own thermometer, so you know which number to believe

From our jobs

What the work actually looks like

Photos our technicians took on real service calls in Orange County.

Every kind

Yes, we work on yours

Including the awkward installs other companies would rather not take on.

Split systems

An outdoor condensing unit with the evaporator in or next to the cellar, joined by refrigerant lines.

Ducted systems

The evaporator sits in the attic or a mechanical room and moves air to the cellar through ducts.

Self-contained units

Through-the-wall units with everything in one housing.

Glass wine rooms

Glass walls let in more heat than an insulated room, so we check the system can keep up with it.

Not sure which you have?

Text us a photo of the model sticker and we will bring the right part.

FAQ

Wine Cellar System repair FAQs

Which brands do you work on?

All of them, including WhisperKOOL, CellarPro, Breezaire, Wine Guardian and KoolR, and systems built from standard refrigeration parts. Send us a photo of the label on the unit and we will tell you before we come.

Do you handle the refrigerant yourselves?

Yes. Leak checks, recovery and recharging are done by our own technicians, not passed on to someone else.

How much is the service call?

For wine cellar systems it is $120 within Orange County. Outside Orange County we add a travel fee and tell you the amount when you call. After the diagnosis you get the full repair price before any work starts.

Do you install new wine cellar cooling systems?

Yes. We look at the room first: its size, the glass, the insulation and where the equipment can go, and then quote the installation. A system that is too small for a glass room runs nonstop and never quite gets there.

My cellar is warming up. Is my wine at risk?

A few degrees for a day or two will not ruin it. Weeks at high temperatures, or big daily swings, will. Keep the door closed, and call us before it gets that far.

Why is there ice on the coil?

Either the air is not moving through it properly or the refrigerant charge is low. Defrosting it by hand only buys time; we find which it is.

How often should the system be serviced?

Once a year is sensible: clean the condenser coil, check the refrigerant pressures and make sure the drain is clear. Outdoor units near the coast or in dusty yards clog faster.

What warranty do I get?

Our labor carries 90 days on every completed repair, and original manufacturer (OEM) parts carry a full year. We tell you which parts are going in before you approve the work.

Still not sure?

Call and describe it. We will tell you straight whether it is worth fixing.
