Garbage Disposal repair FAQs
My disposal just hums. Is it dead?
Almost certainly not. A humming disposal is jammed, not burned out: the motor is trying to turn and cannot. We free the jam, reset it and test it, and only replace the unit if it has genuinely failed.
How much will it cost?
It depends on which part failed. The service visit is free with any repair and $80 otherwise, and you get the full price before any work starts. If it turns out to be something simple we sort it out there and then, covered by the same $80.
It is completely dead, no noise at all.
Start with the little red reset button underneath, which trips more often than people expect and costs nothing. After that it is the wall switch, and only then the motor.
There is water under my sink.
Three usual places: the sink flange at the top, the dishwasher inlet on the side, or a crack in the body. The first two are inexpensive, the third means replacement, and we tell you which before touching anything.
Should I repair it or just replace it?
Jams, resets and flange leaks are always worth fixing. A cracked body or a dead motor is not, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair that will not last.
Can I put a jammed disposal right myself?
Often yes, and we will tell you how on the phone before booking. There is a hex socket underneath for turning the plate by hand, and the reset button next to it. If that frees it, you owe us nothing.
My dishwasher backs up into the sink.
Usually the disposal's dishwasher inlet, which still has its knock-out plug fitted after a recent install, or is blocked. Quick to establish.
It smells even after cleaning.
Usually food trapped under the splash guard rather than in the chamber. We clean it out properly and show you where it collects.
How long does it take?
